What Are the Differences Between Commercial and Industrial Electricians?

10:19 PM

The main difference between commercial and industrial electricians is the environment they work under. Most offices, restaurants and retail stores employ commercial electricians. It is the heavy industries, manufacturing, chemical plants as well as energy production sectors that employ industrial electricians. Commercial electricians as the name suggests work mainly in commercial areas and are employed by home owners.

The Skill Sets Differ Between These Two Classifications.

  • Commercial Electricians: Commercial electricians have duties that are generalized. The places and locations that they work in are those that are accessible by public. That is the reason why their line of work a lot of stress is placed on ensuring that the systems that they are working on are made as safe as possible. This also means that the power lines which they work on belong to the lower end of the spectrum and they normally deal with 110v. This is the normal voltage that office equipment as well as low intensity lighting works on. Sometimes though for ventilation, heating and air conditioning they will need to work on higher voltage systems. Thus, these electricians need to be proficient in basic electrical work and have in depth knowledge of electrical codes and most importantly they need to ensure that the jobs are done right and within the budget.
These commercial electricians carry out jobs of installation, maintenance as well as testing of both old as well as new electrical units and systems in shops, malls, hospitals, schools and stores. They work even with security systems as well as health and safety systems. They also undertake rewiring of the buildings.

  • Industrial Electricians: Industrial electricians on the other hand have knowledge which is beyond what the public has or will come across. Since they work in manufacturing and in industries, the voltages and power can range from very high AC levels to micro levels of direct current. The power transmission systems too are made of sturdy materials and so a lot of safety is ensured for the personnel working on the job as well as in production. Programmable logic, motor controls and troubleshooting various sub systems are part of their daily job. Normally companies have 4-year apprentice programs in which the electricians are trained on the basics as well as all that is needed by the specific industry. The specialization is needed as it is necessary for safety and protection of everyone who is involved in the process.
The main job of these industrial electricians is installation, maintenance, repair of equipment’s and troubleshooting of units and controls. They also repair computerized electrical equipment’s and robotic equipment’s as well. They check the electrical facilities and ensure that there are no major damages which will decrease the productivity of the industry or factory. They either work on contract basis as a freelancer or they could represent a contracting firm.

Both the commercial as well as industrial electricians have the same foundation skills. They all work with electricity ensure great safety levels of the customer. However, there is one other field which is different to these two fields. They are residential electricians. These electricians work and take care of the needs of homeowners.  They can be hired and they can work to test or even fix alarms, can conduct repairs of electrical appliances or rewiring of existing systems. These are employed for new homes or for remodeling and renovating of existing homes. They are also employed to upgrade homes and for installation of newer systems or even for installing modern appliances.
