An Overview of Business Disaster Recovery

4:28 AM

Disasters are something which is always unwelcomed. A disaster can blow away a smoothly functioning system in no time. When we are talking about a business, the disaster may come not only in form of natural catastrophe but also in forms of cyber-attacks, IT system crashes, supply chain problem, etc. This is where Business disaster recovery comes into play. The terms “business disaster recovery” and “business continuity” are closely related. A company requires a business disaster recovery for business continuity. But it should be noted that business continuity is not ensured by business disaster recovery. Basically, Business disaster recovery is the process of compensating the loss that happened due to any disaster in a business.

Any kind of disaster, natural or man-instigated, will cause economic and operational loses. Business Disaster Recovery is the set of instruction that has been formulated to compensate for the loss and bring back the regular routine of the organization when an unprepared event approach.

Some Various Process Involved in Business Disaster Recovery

Business disaster recovery involves a lot of processes and some of the important ones are:
  • Business Data Recovery: In case of natural calamity, IT crashes, the critical data gets lost and in this jeopardize position a backup plan is required to rescue the organization. It can either be an external hardware backup or an online based backup.
  • Server and Network Restoration: In case of an Online based backup, a sync tool operates to restore the data which can be possible only when there are a server and a network restoration.
  • Contingency Savings: These funds are saved up for disaster to compensate for the economic loss incurred in a disaster.

The Process Of Business Disaster Recovery

The process is initiated by Business Impact Analysis (BIA). It analyses about what will be an impact of the disaster and what will be the economic loss that the organization will have to bear as an impact of the catastrophe. Greater the calculated costs, greater will be the saving of an organization plan.
A backup team of employees is trained for emergency tasks after the disaster.

Since communication is expected to be disrupted, a crisis communication system is prepared for the crisis period. A business continuity plan is also designed along with the business disaster recovery plan

Reasons For Failure of Business Disaster Recovery

#1. Lack of Adequate Planning:
A proper business impact analysis followed by a proper designing of recovery plan can only serve the purpose. But it is seen that most of the organization do not provide enough time and effort to plan adequately.

#2. Failure In Testing Recovery Plan:
When a recovery plan is made, testing of the plan is supposed to be done as a mock crisis for the organization to react. The organization is supposed to use the crisis communication system and perform the emergency tasks during this testing process. But unfortunately, this is hardly followed by any organization. Thus, the recovery plan is not carried out properly in the case of actual calamity.

#3. Coordination Between Manager And Authority:
In most cases, the senior level managers do not try to align themselves with the plan of action decided for the recovery plan and thus the execution of business impact analysis becomes difficult. Consequently, a recovery plan is not formulated with the intention of full recovery. The success of a recovery plan deals with the coordination of the senior and the authority.

If business disaster recovery will be formulated and executed efficiently it will ensure that the organization will lose its position even after a major catastrophe. Thus, it is essential to plan a recovery if the organization does not want to lose its grip on the industry due to an unprepared situation.
