We all know that the only thing that keeps on running in the mind of truck drivers or the operators is the timely delivery of the load. But in the race with the time you should not ignore your safety on the road. So to ensure the safety of the driver it is very much important to go through a pre-trip truck inspection before every trip. Since it is so important to perform, it is also important to know how to perform a proper pre-trip truck inspection so that you and your truck are safe on the road.
So, before we proceed to know the process of performing a truck inspection let us understand first what pre-truck inspection is? It is a process in which the driver performs a thorough check of the truck to make sure that every part of the truck is well and good and is performing the way it is intended to. The reason to perform the pre-trip truck inspection every day before the start of the trip is to check and report if there is any defect in your vehicle so that it doesn’t lead to any unfortunate event on the road.

As the name suggests a pre-trip truck inspection has to be performed before the start of each shift and once in every 24 hours when you are on the road. It is compulsory for all truck drivers to perform the inspection before they head on to the road.
Procedure Of pre-trip truck inspection
So, now let us see how to perform a full pre-trip truck inspection to check and identify any mechanical issues and ensuring safety on the road.
First of all, inspect the engine of the vehicle
- Check the oil, coolant levels.
- Look out for any oil, coolant, fuel, power steering fluid leakages.
- Ensure the caps of rad, power steering fluid, oil filter, and the dip stick is properly tightened.
- Check the engine block. Look out for any leaks or fluid running down the side of the engine. Check the fan belts to make sure the belt is properly tensed and is there any signs of wear and tear.
- Check the hoses for any wear and crack.
- Check the engine fan. Check if it is in proper condition.
- Check the electronics. Check if there are any exposed wires or if any wire is not at its proper place.
- Inspect the wiper fluid level.
- Inspect the shock absorbers, ball joints, and kingpins. Make sure they are in good conditions and properly lubricated.

- Check all the tires. Check the air pressure.
- Inspect the airlines and electrical cord to make sure they are appropriately connected.
- Check if the landing gear is working properly, make sure the legs are up and secure and the crank handle is secure.
- Check the trailer suspensions.
- Inspect the brake pads. Make sure they are thick enough.
- Make sure the 5th wheel is properly attached to the trailer.
- Check the entire body of the truck for any kind body damage.
If you find any issue while the truck inspection, note it down and get it repaired before heading on to the road. Now that you have done all the inspection it's time to start the vehicle and check if everything is running properly or not. First of all, start the engine in neutral. Idle the engine at around 650 rpm. Turn on the light and flashers and come out of the vehicle. Let the engine on. Inspect the vehicle and check for any leaks. Check if all the lights are working. Get into the truck and go for a short ride to make sure everything is working properly.
