Even before AC was introduced to the human world, people used a special method of cooling. This system was less complex that the modern-day air conditioners, and also it used water as the medium of cooling. Owing to this reason this older cooling system was said to be eco-friendly and efficient in lowering the temperature of the area where the system would work. It lowers the temperature during extreme hot seasons, and it uses the thermal energy in the air.
Even though the air conditioners are smother than the evaporative coolers, the latter one is one of the oldest technologies whose efficiency hasn’t decreased even by a bit.
For this reason, today we will discuss some of the less known facts about how the evaporative cooling system works, its benefits, types, and so on. It provides clean and fresh air always and does not lead to any form of congestion or air filtration problem.
How Does the Evaporative Cooler Work?
The evaporative cooling mechanism works on the heat absorption capacity of the water. Water is said to have high latent heat, because of which it can absorb a huge amount of heat energy at its boiling point to change from the liquid to the gaseous state.
Here, you will have a reservoir filled with water. There is a fan inside the system which draws in the hot air from the environment. Once the air passes over the cooling pads, the water droplets absorb the heat from the air to evaporate. Theoretically, one kilogram of water can absorb about 2260 kilojoules of heat energy from the air. As a result, the air is cooled down and then it is blown into the rooms by the evaporative cooling system.
What Are the Types of The Cooler Present in The Market?
When you are learning about the evaporative cooling system, we think it would be of great help if you also learned about the types. This way you can select the most appropriate one for your purpose.
- Direct evaporative air coolers: in this type of cooler, you only have to add water to the reservoir. Rest of the materials is already pre-built into a large box, which requires no installation.
- Indirect evaporative coolers: in this system, the air drawn inside the cooler is heated externally by another source present inside.
- Mounted coolers: from the name itself you can understand that these coolers will be installed on some surface, be it on the wall, above the window ledger, or anywhere else in your home.
What Are the Benefits of Using An Evaporative Cooler In The House?
Often people compare the air coolers with the ACs, and at the end, they simply reach the conclusion that ACs are far better than the coolers. Yes, to some extent it’s true but that doesn’t mean the evaporative cooling systems are not at all beneficial.
So, let’s take a quick glance at the advantages of installing one such system in your house.
- It helps keep the environment safe from harmful gases which are otherwise released by the ACs.
- Due to the high latent heat capacity of the water, a large amount of heat can be removed from the air circulating in your room.
- Both portable and mounted designs are available for the evaporative coolers.
- It is comparatively cheaper than air conditioners, as a portable unit uses around 4 litres water per hour as compared to a central system that uses around 25 litres of water.
Installing an evaporative cooling system in your home would never give you an opportunity to complain about its efficiency and effectiveness. Considering this, gear yourself up and start looking for the best system to be used in your home.
