All You Need to Know About Plastic Tubing

3:36 AM

Plastics are known for its various kinds of domestic and industrial use. There are different methods involved in the manufacturing of different kinds of plastic products. Plastic Tubes are one category of products which are manufactured from plastic compounds and are used for passing fluids, gases, and many other applications through them.

The plastic tube is made of varying structures and finish, where each type can be used for different types of applications. The Plastic tubes are usually made of lightweight and the final properties of the plastic tube constructed are directly attributed to the type of plastic materials used in the manufacturing of the plastic tubes.  The various mixtures of chemicals and other elements are used in the process of manufacturing plastics which are responsible for critical properties of the plastic product thus manufactured such as durability. These manufacturing is often based on the industry standards.

Properties of Plastic Materials Used in Plastic Tubing:

The material used in the manufacturing of plastic plays a crucial role in deciding the application for which it will be used. The following summarizes the types of plastic tubes, which are made of different materials for use in different applications.
  • Plastic tubes made of Polysulfide have the properties to withstand extreme weather conditions.
  • Polystyrene tubes are used for passing chemical and other liquids through the plastic tube and the tube is expected to resist the chemical and prevent the pipe from corrosion and other reactions.
  • For pipes, which are expected to have the features of fire and flame resistance, plastic pipes made of Polycarbonates are used.
  • Some of the common types of plastics which are used in the manufacturing of plastic tubes includes EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate), Fluoropolymers, Nylon, Polyethylene, Polyketones, Polypropylene, Polyurethane, and PVC (poly-vinyl chloride).
Each of these types of plastics attributes unique properties which makes them suitable for various kinds of applications in various types of industries.

For use of the plastic tubes in sensitive industries such as food and beverages, critical standards must be met as defined by FDA.

Key Attributes affecting Performance of Plastic Tubes:

The performance of the tube is the important aspect to be considered and the following are the key attributes that affect the performance of plastic tubes cush as material of plastics which are used in making the tube.

Pressure Rating of the Tube:

Each type of tube is made of plastic material that has the minimum and maximum range of pressure it withstands, which may vary from case to case, depending on the quality of the material used to manufacture the tube. The rating is usually important for applications where the tube is used for fluid flow and the pressure is measured in the units of Pounds per square inch. One other important attribute is the calculation of maximum vacuum pressure rating which should be determined to identify the maximum range of vacuum that can be created within the tube.

Bend Radius:

For structural application of the plastic tubes, where the tube is subjected to load, the allowed amount of deformation the tube can undergo is usually what is stated in terms of the bend radius. The unit used to measure this bend radius is usually in millimeters or inches.

Temperature Range:

This attribute defines the maximum temperature range of the materials or fluids which can be allowed to flow through the plastic tube without causing damage to the pipe structure.  Failing to meet the range of the temperature not only will lead to adverse performance of the tube, but also might lead to damage of the tube structure.
